What it's all about

il bel far niente.

this past saturday night, after celebrating my lovely friend lindsay's upcoming nuptials with a fabulous bridal shower, we found ourselves in pj's on the couch sans significant others...

so we thought, what a wonderful opportunity to watch a chick flick that neither of us had had any luck convincing our honeys to watch with us!

eat pray love it was!

it was a really sweet movie... i hadn't read the book because i thought it was too trendy.
i know, i know, this coming from the girl who read all the twilight books and sookie stackhouse novels.  eesh.

anyway, one of the phrases in the movie that stood out was the beautiful italian saying "il bel far niente", which means: the beauty of doing nothing.

there is another line in the movie where luca spaghetti, a robust little italian man says:
"americans- you work too hard, you get burned out, and come home and spend the whole weekend in your pajamas in front of the tv."
truth!
it totally is a completely american thing to feel the need to have this constant busy-ness and running around.  we consider it lazy to do nothing but eat pasta and drink wine!  pssht!
i'm moving to italy.

well i'm not really moving to italy.  but, i can proudly say that after three weeks of struggling to accomplish a zillion things (why?) and being a nervous new mom,
i have finally relaxed.
finn and i are comfortable with each other at home.  we have figured it out. (so far).

i have come to a comfortable compromise with my housekeeping.  the laundry is always done, the house is always tidy, and most days i have dinner ready when billy gets home.  but the floors aren't always glistening, the tubs aren't always sparkling, and i'm okay with that.
there are some days when i want to go to the store, or get outside, run some errands, visit friends, and get out of the house.  so we do.

but there are other days, like today, when i can fully appreciate il bel far niente.
i have learned that sometimes the greatest feeling of accomplishment comes not from having checked off everything on my to do list, but from doing nothing more than spending the entire afternoon holding our little finn wilde.
you can really appreciate the beauty of doing nothing when you're holding a baby.
and when the barefoot contessa is cooking on tv.
and you have biscuits in the oven.
and it's drizzly and cold outside but warm and cozy inside.

but not to worry, i do have some little house projects up my sleeve.
i won't always be blogging about nothing.
but today, nothing is just enough :)

This post makes me so happy for you! Doing nothing with your baby is bliss! And exactly what they need! Enjoy being a momma...the house will always stay the same....your baby will not! Hugs to you Meg!

So well said and I adore the picture. I think this is part of the reason I love nursing Waverly...it's so nice to HAVE to stop and do nothing but cuddle and feed her.

Also, I turned off Eat, Pray, Love as soon as James Franco showed up because something about him gives me the heebie jeebies. But everyone keeps saying how good it is! I'm going to have to write that saying on the chalkboard paint that surrounds our fireplace. :)
