What it's all about

first night out.

after an unforeseen work situation forced us to cancel our ski trip to tremblant, billy and i rallied and decided to spend new years weekend with my folks down in maryland.

we had a great time as usual, and got to spend a little extra time with my cousin and her fiance who were still down visiting from canada.

my parents were amazing and volunteered to keep finny pie so we could go out!

we found this great little dive bar in downtown silver spring called the quarry house, and it is my new favorite.

they had a good beer and whiskey selection, and yummy tater tots and fried pickles.

but mostly i just loved the classic dive vibe.  it was grungy, dark, and just what we had in mind.

billy also kept getting mad at me for taking pictures with my flash on, so obviously i did that a lot.

also, they had unrivaled bathroom graffiti.  i made two trips just to keep reading.

we stayed in on new years eve, but billy and i decided to go out new years day eve to celebrate.  we left finn home with grandma and grandpa and got a hotel in d.c. for the first night away from baby ever!  it was so awesome of them to keep finn overnight for us.

we were really nervous, and we missed him a lot, but we knew he was in good hands, and we had a great time together.  i would like to say that i had 8 hours of blissful, uninterrupted sleep for the first time since finn was born, but i still pretty much woke up every two hours :)

we stayed at the hotel helix.  it was totally rad.

with our new found freedom we first went to blackjack bar, which is decorated like a crazy circus freak show and boasts a super interesting martini list (billy had the sazerac- made with straight rye, absinthe, bitters and lemon) and a full bocce court in the back with stadium seating.

we had dinner at the downstairs restaurant, the pearl dive.  it was really a neat place and we loved that it was run off of wind energy and used sustainable local and organic products.  they also recycle all of their oyster shells for cool inner city projects.

billy loves oysters.  i tried my first raw one!  i heard somewhere recently that oysters are just a vehicle for hot sauce and horseradish, and i agree completely.  it was like swallowing a big cold wad with cocktail sauce on it.  but it actually wasn't terrible.  and dinner was delish.

so, despite our unexpected change of holiday plans, we really had a great weekend.  with family, and just the two of us.  i'd say we started 2012 off right!
